Graton is a charming small town surrounded by scenic beauty and rich history. Located in the Green Valley area, Graton is bordered by Sebastopol to the south, Occidental to the west, Forestville to the north, and Santa Rosa to the east. The history of Graton dates back to the time of the Pomo and Miwok Native American tribes, who were the area's first inhabitants.

Located approximately 20 miles from the California coastline, the town also holds historical significance as it marks the furthest southern and eastern extent of Russian colonization of the Americas. Research conducted on nearby Fort Ross, a 19th century coastal fur trading center of the Russian American Company in northwestern Sonoma County, indicates that several farms were established inland from the fort for agricultural purposes.

In 1836, a farm was founded along Purrington Creek, situated between what are now the towns of Occidental and Graton. This farm, overseen by Fort Ross's agronomist Yegor Chernykh, played a vital role in producing food and conducting agricultural experiments in cultivating vegetables, fruits, wheat, and grains. Additionally, he developed a large vineyard, introducing viticulture to the area, which has since become a prominent crop in the region.

In the late 1800s, the region gained prominence as settlers realized the agricultural potential of the fertile land, earning it the nickname "Gold Ridge." The apple industry thrived in Graton during the early 20th century, with orchards and processing facilities dotting the landscape.
